Basic checks on diesel generators

Here at FW Power we get many phone calls each week with people asking us for advise about what is the best way to look after their generator. Now depending upon the size and purpose of the generator there will be slightly different checks however performing regular checks on your diesel generator is essential for maintaining its performance and longevity. Here are some basic checks you can do:

1. **Visual Inspection**:

– Walk around the generator, check for any visible signs of leaks (fuel, oil, coolant). There should be no leaks, therefore any signs of leaks then a specilaist diesel generator engineer should be called in.  Contact our service department should this be the case.

– Inspect the generator for any loose or damaged components, including belts and hoses.

– Inspect the generator for any debris, animal waste or obstructions to air flow. This is common on dusty sites such as quarries.

1. **Fluid Levels**:

**Oil Level**: Check the engine oil level using the dipstick and top up if necessary.

**Coolant Level**: Ensure the coolant reservoir is filled to the appropriate level.

**Fuel Level**: Make sure there’s enough diesel fuel for operation.

1. **Battery Check**:

– Inspect the battery for corrosion or loose connections.

– Check the battery charge and clean terminals if needed.

1. **Air Filter**:

– Examine the air filter for dirt or blockages and replace it if necessary to ensure proper airflow.

1. **Fuel Filter**:

– Inspect the fuel filter and replace it if it appears clogged or dirty

1. **Exhaust System**:

– Check the exhaust for signs of leaks or damage, and ensure there are no obstructions.

1. **Cooling System**:

– Inspect the radiator and cooling fans for debris, and clean them as needed.

1. **Control Panel**:

– Test the control panel and ensure all indicators and gauges are functioning correctly.

1. **Operation Test**:

– Run the generator for a short period to listen for unusual sounds and ensure it starts smoothly.

– Check that all safety alarms and shutdowns work properly during operation.

10.**Cleaning**:

– Regularly clean the exterior of the generator to prevent dust buildup and corrosion.

11. **Inspect Wiring and Connections**:

– Check all electrical connections for wear or damage. Any signs of burnt cables should be reported asap.

12. **Generator Load Test**:

– This is not a basic check but one that should be performed by a skilled engineer. A load bank test is essential if your generator is used for backup purposes as a generators true condition is not fully known until the generator is running and under load. The load bank test mimics the sites load and can test to esnure the generator is performing as required.

By performing these basic checks regularly, you can help ensure your diesel generator operates reliably and efficiently, reducing the risk of unexpected breakdowns. Always refer to the manufacturer’s manual for specific guidelines and recommendations for your particular model.
