Choose between an acoustic canopy and an open generator with the installation environment in mind. This guide supports early planning; the final generator and electrical installation should be checked against the actual equipment, site conditions and duty.
Acoustic generators
A weatherproof acoustic canopy can reduce emitted noise and simplify an external installation, but performance varies by model and measurement conditions.
Open generators
An open set is suited to a correctly designed plant room or bespoke enclosure. The room must provide cooling airflow, combustion air, safe exhaust routing and maintenance access.
Noise assessment
“Silent” is a market term, not a universal sound level. Compare measured dB(A) at a stated distance and load, then assess the receiver locations and planning constraints.
Heat and airflow
Additional attenuation creates resistance. Louvres, splitters and ductwork must be sized so that the engine and alternator remain within their temperature limits.
Serviceability
Provide room to remove filters, batteries, radiator components and major assemblies. A compact enclosure that cannot be maintained safely is not a complete solution.
Understand published noise data
Sound pressure should be stated at a distance, operating load and measurement condition. A change of location, reflective walls or multiple sets can alter the result at a boundary or occupied room. Set a project noise criterion at the relevant receiver and assess the complete installation, including exhaust, airflow openings and vibration paths.
Treat ventilation as part of the generator
The radiator must reject engine heat while the room or canopy removes radiated heat. Air should enter and leave without recirculating hot discharge air. Acoustic splitters, grilles and ducts add resistance, so fan capability and allowable pressure drop must be checked. The exhaust also needs safe routing, insulation, support and allowance for thermal movement.
Select for access and environment
External canopies need drainage, corrosion protection and secure access. Plant rooms need safe walkways, lighting and routes for component removal. In either case, allow space to inspect batteries, filters, belts, coolant, terminals and control equipment. Consider fuel containment and fire strategy with the wider site design.

Share the site location, required voltage and phase, intended prime or standby duty, expected running hours and a schedule of the equipment to be powered. Include motor starting methods, UPS or variable-speed-drive data, the largest load step, fuel-runtime target, noise constraints and the proposed installation position where known.
